Located on 62 gently rolling acres in Sandy Spring, MD, Friends House is a freestanding nonprofit Life Plan Community (CCRC) offering a full continuum of residential and care options. Founded on Quaker values and open to seniors of all backgrounds and persuasions, the mission of Friends House is to build a community through caring. Just north of Silver Spring, Maryland, the campus is close to excellent medical care, shopping and museums. 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO provides vision, strategic direction, fiscal oversight and leadership in the fulfillment of the community’s mission and vision. S/he monitors the changing landscape of senior living and proactively envisions mission-aligned strategic alternatives open to the community for consideration by the Board of Directors. Additionally, the CEO demonstrates a commitment to the Quaker mission and values of Friends House by serving and working to engage the community’s residents and their families, managing staff, and by interactions with the greater community, thus fostering an atmosphere of performance excellence, transparency, and respect. 

Friends House can currently accommodate 130 residential living households along with 103 individuals in Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. In 2017, Friends House also embarked on a sweeping Master Plan of redevelopment to permit a significantly larger market rate independent living population, a major transformation of health services, and a re-imagining and repositioning of the community’s original affordable housing facilities, a three-phase  transformation of the entire campus. 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 10 years of managerial and leadership experience; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record in designing and leading performance excellence initiatives resulting in continuous and sustained improvement.
  • Track record of success in providing leadership in repositioning and construction projects, while ensuring a continued focus on maintaining high quality and financially viable service for existing residents.
  • Superb communication, interpersonal and diplomatic skills with the empathy and genuine interest to work with board members and residents and staff throughout Friends House. 
  • Strong operational acumen that includes fiscal management, performance assessment, management accountability, an outcomes orientation, and experience in developing innovative programs and partnerships to enhance resident, family, and associate engagement.
  • The ability and interest to represent and become the public face of Friends House in Montgomery County and its environs.
  • Possession of, or eligibility to sit for, a Maryland Nursing Home Administrator’s license is preferred, but not required.
  • In all of the above, evidence of a personal and trusting presence that is driven by the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, values, and goals of Friends House. The successful candidate will demonstrate integrity, sincerity, humility, kindness, and respect for individuals, and inspire trust in and from others.
