FSA Internship Program | 2021 Projects
We have been privileged to be able to offer a variety of internship experiences for students. There is one application that can be used to apply for any of these internships. Broadmead
Diversity Strategic Marketing and Communications Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Acts as a thinking partner for the Director of Diversity and Inclusion to identify, develop and implement goals and action steps to enable Broadmead to connect with local communities of color.
- Research: Identifies and explores research to deepen their understanding of the variety of senior living options for older adults, particularly life plan communities; learn about the needs and interests of older adults of color in the community; examine best practices at other organizations.
- Plans, develops and executes a marketing and outreach plan.
- Works with team members to plan and execute virtual seminars and events.
- Prepares and maintains any required reports. Use available systems to manage outreach contact base and ensure that outreach inquiries are managed in a timely manner.
- Develops and implements a communications strategy. Outreach and communication efforts include but are not limited to: identifying channels for outreach, developing relationships with external stakeholders and conducting outreach efforts on Broadmead’s behalf, partnering with key community groups for educational efforts regarding living in a CCRC.
- Creates new and cultivates existing relationships with professional referral sources.

Friends House Retirement Community
Community Planning Internship/Dog Park Feasibility Study
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research the social and health benefits and risks of owning a dog and having access to a dog park in a senior retirement community; explore ways to support the relationship between the elder and their dog, as the owner’s capacity to care for the animal declines due to decreased mobility, vision or cognitive impairment.
- Learn to design inclusive meetings that foster generative thinking among the stakeholders.
- Write recommendations based upon budget, research and stakeholder input; present findings to the stakeholders in a whitepaper and Power Point presentation.
- Work with Development to Director to identify potential for fund raising campaign.
- Write the story of the dog park for a marketing and development campaigns.
Learning Benefits:
- The intern will be have a multi-disciplinary internship experience through mentoring by members of the senior staff including: Chief Executive Office, Chief Financial Officer, Development Director, Operations Director, Risk Manager and Resident Services Coordinator.
- The intern will attend weekly informal community meetings, weekly staff stand-up meetings and several resident association meetings each month.
Human Resources Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create a HR manual, develop a process to store vital records in the cloud, create an e-signature system and policy. Additionally he/she will create educational videos to help communicate to staff.
- Monitor compliance audits, FMLA audits, PTO audits, health records, and assist with the payroll process. As well as conduct an Wage and Benefit Survey.
- Assist in “Telling the story of Friends House Employees” in the newly revised website. They will prepare the benefit brochure, interview staff and produce videos telling their stories.
Development/Social Media Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with the total revision of the FH Website.
- Compose and complete a Friends House Newsletter.
- Increase social media presence.
- Database and list management.
Learning Benefits:
- Gain experience in various media, and fundraising tactics.
- Teach others how to follow in their footsteps by writing a standard operating procedure for the next group of interns arriving at Friends House.
Health Information Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Skill Nursing Health Care Units with the extensive process of integrating the electronic health record with the automated medication orders process.
- Assist the facility with our EHR (Electronic Health Record) in order that we may maximize its potential to result in a higher level of usage by: Educating and delivering in-services to staff on using the HER system, including areas that have not yet been utilized; Codifying procedures and writing policies or manuals for future reference.
Friends Services Alliance
Healthcare or Hospitality Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interview staff at FSA Member organizations for the purpose of creating a Public Policy or Hospitality Internship Job Description for general use for future interns.
- Use the information along with their current knowledge of the needs of students hoping to enter these areas to create and present the final project to FSA Leadership at the end of the experience.
- Attend FSA trainings and industry meetings and career presentations to enhance your individual professional and personal development.
Learning Benefits:
- Provide exposure to wide range of meaningful opportunities to learn about senior living through the lens of hospitality-based or public policy areas (i.e. Client & Family Experience, Support Services & Healthcare Administration, etc.).
Requirements:
- Hospitality and Healthcare Administration, or related college major strongly preferred.
- Conscientious self-starter with good organizational skills, project management skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities, must be able to multi-task
- Strong interpersonal communication and ability to collaborate with teams; must effectively operate independently, across functional lines, and with internal customers.
- Demonstrated personal initiative, self-motivation, flexibility, adaptability and willingness to learn.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Kendal at Oberlin
Healthcare Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Chief Health Services Officer in the finalization of policies and procedures in in preparation for CARF 5-year re-accreditation.
- Help collect, review, edit and organize policy and procedures across the continuum of care (Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, Independent Living, and medical clinic) for the review process.
- Learn to use the Kendal intranet software program
- Create digital and hard copy binders of information
- The student intern’s eight weeks will be supervised by Kendal’s Chief Health Service Officer and Corporate Compliance Official, Stacy Scott Terrell, LNHA, MBA, MDiv, and will work closely with other disciplinary team members.
Learning Benefits:
- The intern will be able to verbalize how CARF standards are applied throughout Kendal at Oberlin.
- The intern will gain basic understanding of life plan community operations.
- The intern will gain a basic understanding of the interdisciplinary approach to resident care and support in a continuum of care setting.
- The intern will be able to take responsibility for creating binders that document Kendal at Oberlin’s compliance with CARF standards.
- The intern will gain skills in policy and procedure software.
- The intern will establish relationships with interdisciplinary team members and residents.
- The intern will interview residents and staff on how Kendal at Oberlin meets CARF Standards.
- The intern will develop organization, writing, and implementation skills.
