FSA Internship Summer 2020

FSA’s Internship Program offers the next generation the opportunity to work and live in a Life Plan Community/CCRC. This unique experience allows students to align their interests and career paths as well as to develop practical skillsets, teamwork and industry knowledge.

The students from this summers program were able to benefit from the internship despite the shift to remote work. Madalynn Talerico, administration intern at Friends Home in Kennett said, “…I was able to gain a lot of confidence in my research, writing, and articulating skills. I wish I would have been able to experience this internship without COVID-19, but I was able to gain insight into the operations and struggle during a pandemic in America, which was very interesting.”

2020 has been a challenge for many and our interns had to pivot, adapt and be resilient as most businesses and their workforce did the same. Despite the change from in-person to remote, students still took advantage of learning from multiple people within multiple departments. Ching-Hsien Chiu, assisted living intern at Friends Village at Woodstown states, “I had a deeper understanding of the assisted living section through working with the marketing, human resource, dining services, and life enrichment departments.”

Carly Jennings was able to learn about the operations through hands-on experience with Foxdale Village Retirement Communitys software. In addition, she was able to experience the Quaker values and the hallmarks of our member organization. “This internship taught me a great deal more than I expected; not only do I now have an applied understanding of electronic medical records, Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPIs) and direct care platforms, I have a better understanding of the types of values that make an excellent long-term care facility.”

This past summer marks the 9th year for the program and FSA is proud to have placed nearly 50 interns in member locations nationwide.  In the upcoming year, we will continue to expand our program and enrich students’ academic careers with hands-on work experience.

The FSA Internship Program is sponsored by Friends Foundation for the Aging.
